Established in 2001, the .NAME universal TLD is the only one meant for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to secure john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level domain names remained working.
